While a truly scarless tummy tuck is a myth in current times, there are certain techniques in use by plastic/cosmetic surgeons that leave a minimal scar with the tummy tuck. The virtually scarless tummy tuck procedure includes an incision in the abdominal region of the body. From this incision, the doctor is able to remove undesirable belly fat and excess skin from the abdomen. The result is a flatter, tighter abdominal area.

There are two basic types of tummy tucks available to patients who are wanting to modify their outward appearance. The traditional tummy tuck, and the mini-tummy tuck (this is the type that is usually referred to as the scarless tummy tuck). The scarring with the mini-tummy tuck is much less than with the original traditional tummy tuck procedure.

For individuals who have fat deposits mostly in the lower section of the abdomen, the scarless tummy tuck may be the best option. This procedure leaves only a minimal scar made by the surgeon’s vertical incision across the lower abdomen when removing the unwanted fat and skin. This small scar is easy to hide beneath a pair of panties or a bikini bottom on the beach.

The mini-tummy tuck (or scarless tummy tuck) is less dangerous than the original traditional procedure which involves a much longer vertical scar all the way from one side of a patient’s hip, to the other. Also, during the standard procedure, a patient’s belly button is removed and repositioned. This can be a long and drawn out procedure.

On the other hand, the scarless tummy tuck can begin and end in under two short hours. Reduced time under anesthesia equals a reduced risk to the patient. The scarless tummy tuck also does not require a long extended hospital stay for recovery. Patients are usually released the same day of surgery to recover in the comfort of their own home.

Potential patients should be aware however, that during the first four to six weeks after the mini-tummy tuck, they may still have a bit of pain, swelling, bruising, and tenderness in the surgical location. There are more rare and serious complications that are possible, such as infection, slowed healing, bleeding, or even skin necrosis. The key to a healthy recovery is the strict compliance with the surgeon’s post surgical care instructions.
